The world of online sales is taking over — just look at Amazon. Even small businesses are thriving with e-commerce. A big trend with online stores is drop shipping, which is when a company ships their goods straight from the factory, and the manufacturer fulfills the orders instead of you shipping from a warehouse.

One of the best to master this tactic is John “Wizard” Robb, who generated six figures in revenue with his drop shipping suppliers in its first couple of months, marketing through Instagram influencers. I first started with drop shipping, which is what took my company to the next level. For anyone interested in starting their own drop shipping store, the following tips can either take your business to the next level or give you some ideas to get started.

Build a brand, even if you’re selling generic products.

I took extra steps to build relationships with my suppliers. I was able to have them white-label packages, adding my logo and branding. When I saw posts of my clothes or memes on Instagram, there would always be people asking “Where are these from?” followed with the response, “Oh, these are from Almighty Jerseys.”

Make as much money as you can per visitor by optimizing, retargeting and experimenting.

This allows you to quickly scale your ad campaigns and grow your business. I tested various landing page layouts and styles, upselling, email marketing, adding payment gateways, reducing checkout friction and trying new ad formats, target audiences and products. The great thing about an asset-light business like a dropship direct store is you can be agile and quickly readjust and fine-tune everything.

Decrease ad spend by cutting deals with your ad partners/influencers.

Make long-term and bulk deals, or offer performance-based compensation. I built affiliate and cost-per-like deals.

Don’t try so hard.

Your ad content shouldn’t look like an advertisement. Ads aren’t cool. The No. 1 mistake I see people make with influencer marketing is having influencers post ads that look like ads. Social media users have completely tuned out advertisements, immediately ignoring and swiping past them.

Instagram’s feed is sorted algorithmically, so if your ad content isn’t getting engagement, Instagram won’t push it to be seen by more people. I bypassed this by first, not using generic ad copy and formatting (e.g., “Go buy these amazing shorts for 10% off") and second, making sure the ad content and format fit the page posting it. All my ads were memes, so I had meme-niched accounts post them to get the best engagement possible.

Putting this all together will result in low CPMs and high conversion rates — the perfect formula for a successful business.

I learned that,o truly create a brand, you need to make sure your customer is happy at all times, which is why, when it's time to scale, you need to have faster shipping options. But for anyone starting out who doesn't have the capital for tons of inventory, these methods can really help you start your company. Take everything day by day, and with hard work, you can achieve the goals you speak into existence.
