DEP has monitored two leaking sections on the Delaware Aqueduct — one in the Orange County town of Newburgh, and the other inside Ulster County town of Wawarsing — considering that 1990s. The leaks release around 20 million gallons on a daily basis, about 95 percent of these escaping the tunnel over the leak near the Hudson Sea in Newburgh. DEP provides continuously tested and administered the leaks since 1992. The type and model of the cracks inside aqueduct and the charge of leakage have remained constant over that period.

In 2010, the city announced a thought to repair the aqueduct simply by building the bypass tunnel round the leaking section in Newburgh, and in addition by grouting closed the particular smaller leaks in Wawarsing. The project began while using excavation of two directory shafts in Newburgh and Wappinger to obtain the subsurface. These shafts, 845 as well as 675 feet deep respectively, were completed in 2017. Workers then built a large underground chamber at the bottom of the Newburgh base. That chamber has served as being the staging area for assembly and operation from the tunnel boring machine, and as the location from which excavated rock is brought to the surface by a large crane.

The existing Delaware Aqueduct will always be in service while the actual bypass tunnel is under construction. Once the bypass canal is nearly complete in addition to water supply augmentation and conservation measures come in place, the existing tunnel are going to be taken out of service and excavation are going to connect the bypass tunnel to structurally sound portions belonging to the existing aqueduct. While the Delaware Aqueduct is shut down, work crews will in addition enter the aqueduct with Wawarsing to seal the tiny leaks there, roughly 35 miles northwest with the bypass tunnel.

The project will mark initially that the Delaware Aqueduct might be drained since 1958. In 2013, DEP installed new pumps in a shaft at the lowest point in the Delaware Aqueduct to dewater the previous tunnel before it is attached to the new bypass tunnel. Those pumps will be tested many times before the tunnel can be drained in 2022. The nine pumps are designed for removing a maximum associated with 80 million gallons of water a day from the tunnel — a lot more than quadruple the capacity on the pumps they replaced on the 1940s. The largest belonging to the pumps are three vertical turbine pumps that every measure 23 feet high and weigh 9 lots.
