pets escape after LED lightstrip malfunction torches Penn Township home

The fire broke out on the 100 block of Hufnagle Drive at 10:08 p.m., according to York County 911 records.

Despite the four residents being home at the time, no one was injured in the fire, said Hanover Area Fire & Rescue Chief Tony Clousher. A cat and a dog also escaped without injury, he said.

Clousher said that the fire appeared to have been accidental in nature, appearing to originate from an electrical malfunction. A resident told Clousher that they were in their bedroom when they began to see smoke, and then flames, coming from the area of an LED light strip in the room. The fire was mostly contained to the bedroom where it originated, Clousher said. Help in containing the fire came thanks to one resident closing the door to the burning bedroom before leaving the house, trapping the fire in the room and starving it of oxygen, he said.

Clousher applauded the resident's quick thinking, suggesting others should follow the same actions in the event of discovering a fire.

"If you ever have a fire, close the door," Clousher said. "It will help contain the fire."

There was extensive smoke damage throughout the rest of the home, according to Clousher, and water damage throughout the basement as the heat broke a water pipe. Firefighters disabled the water to the home to stop the leaking pipe, Clousher said.
