Understanding Truck Brake Linings The need for long service life and reduced downtime for truck brake lining has never been more urgent. Larger trailer configurations, higher payloads, and technological engine developments with an increased focus on safety mean that braking systems are more demanding than ever. As the brake lining wears down, the brakes may chatter, squeak or squeal. The brake wear indicator is used to warn the user and/or owner of the vehicle that the brake pads need to be replaced. Its main field of application is motor vehicles with more than three wheels. Brake assemblies of industrial-sized commercial vehicles, such as trucks and tractor-trailers, generally contain two brake shoes and four brake linings for each brake drum4. The Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for enforcing minimum standards for commercial motor vehicles5. The thickness of the brake lining and pads of steering axle brakes on a truck, truck-tractor or bus “shall not be less than 4.8 mm (/6 inch) at the shoe center for a shoe with a continuous strip of lining”5. The thickness requirements are at least 6.4 mm (/4 inch) for two pads5. For non-steering axle brakes on an air braked commercial motor vehicle, the thickness of the brake lining and pads shall not be less than 6.4 mm (/4 inch)5. If disc brakes are used, the minimum thickness is . mm (/8 inch)5. If hydraulic or electric brakes are used, the minimum thickness is .6 mm (/6 inch)5.
